Ben Crick celebrates Skipton Camerata’s 20th anniversary conducting Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony and a much-loved guitar concerto.
Guitarist Roberto Carrillo-Garcia is the soloist in the famously flamenco-infused Concierto de Aranjuez by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. The concerto’s popularity owes much to the haunting melody of its central adagio.
The concert opens with Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, written as a birthday gift to his wife and to celebrate the birth of their son. Wagner’s influence is also heard in two short idyllic pieces by Bradford-born Frederick Delius.
The concert concludes with Beethoven’s exuberant Symphony No. 8, perhaps the most ebulliently experimental symphony that Beethoven composed.
